Three-quarters of Singapore teachers hold degrees

An article from the Straits Times dated 25 Dec 2007, inferring that graduate teachers will produce better students.

Three-quarters of Singapore teachers hold degrees

Do you agree? There appears to be mixed opinions, judging by the comments that follow the report.

Almost any other person we know these days are uni graduates. Whether or not they make excellent teachers, now that's totally another issue. A friend I know who happens to be only a diploma holder, has been helping students improve their academic results from the last 8 years. In spite of her qualifications, she has the capability to motivate students of different academic abilities to achieve their potential. Of course, a graduate teacher may have all the expertise to deliver but not everyone is cut out for teaching, graduate or not.

Thanks for your comments. About 2 years ago or so, there was a news article report on how principals in schools commented mid-career change teachers who came from the private sector were more adaptable than teachers who have not been in the private sector. There was no mention about the graduate/non-graduate comparison. Looks like experience from a wide spectrum in life plays a major part, while the debate on graduate/non-graduate issue has still not indicated anything clear.

A degree is just a stepping stone towards the advancement of a new career for the novice. However, i do not feel that having a degree can teach a student to become better. Some degree holders do not even know how to solve PSLE Mathematical problems despite the fact that they have a higher degree.
